Every day new information is coming to light regarding the effects of BPA, found in the plastics we use in our food. Today's health messages contained the following:
Rochester study raises new questions about controversial plastics chemical
A University of Rochester Medical Center study challenges common assumptions about the chemical bisphenol A (BPA), by showing that in some people, surprisingly high levels remain in the body even after fasting for as long as 24 hours. The finding suggests that BPA exposure may come from non-food sources, or that BPA is not rapidly metabolized, or both.
The journal Environmental Health Perspectives published the research online January 28, 2009.
"Common Chemical Linked to Metabolic and Cardiovascular Disorders
Exposure to a chemical commonly used in food packaging materials may be putting millions at an increased risk for cardiovascular disorders, diabetes, and liver abnormalities, researchers here said. "
Previously accumulated information relating more to pets can be found in the following:
BPA is primarily used to make polycarbonate plastic food and beverage containers, plastic food wrap, and epoxy resins that are used to line metal cans for food, such as cans of soup. Polycarbonate plastic food and beverage containers that contain BPA will be labeled recycling symbol #7. However, not all recycling symbol #7 containers will be made with BPA.
Bisphenol-A when combined with insulin causes body cells to develop into fat cells:
"The presence of BPA during the same period caused a 150% increase in the TG content, a 60% increase in the LPL activity, and a 500% increase in the GPDH activity. Thus, BPA by itself can trigger 3T3-L1 fibroblasts to differentiate into adipocytes. Next, the confluent cultures were treated with BPA for 2 days and subsequently treated with a combination of INS and BPA for 9 days. The simultaneous presence of BPA with INS caused a 370% increase in the TG content, a 200% increase in the LPL activity, and a 225% increase in the GPDH activity compared with the cultures treated with INS alone."
"The researchers tested BPA’s effect on glucose regulation by measuring glucose and insulin levels in adult male mice treated with BPA injections, then comparing them with levels in mice treated with E2 and a control group treated with corn oil. BPA caused oversecretion of insulin in mice at a dose of 10 micrograms per kilogram body weight per day (μg/kg/day) via a rapid mechanism, taking only 15 to 30 minutes. Treatment over a course of four days with 100 μg/kg/day induced the insulin resistance that precedes type 2 diabetes. E2 had the same effects at the same doses. Glucose metabolism remained stable in the control rats."
Determination of bisphenol A in canned pet foods.
"The concentration of BPA ranged from 13 to 136 ng/g in canned cat food and from 11 to 206 ng/g in dog food. Also, to confirm that the BPA had originated from the can coating, distilled water was added to each washed empty can and the cans were autoclaved at 121 degrees C for 30 min. The concentration of BPA leached from empty cans was between 7 and 31 ng/ml."
While there have been rumblings in the nutritional forest around bishpenol-A possibly causing problems for a number of life forms, what hasn't been approached in the past is the effect upon genetic coding, and the result for future generations. New reports are starting to emerge, such as the following report on epigenic influence:
In August 2007, Duke University researcher Randy Jirtle and his team, published research in the journal PNAS, the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences focusing on bisphenol-A, a common chemical in polycarbonate plastic.
"It's everywhere," Jirtle said. "It's in most hard plastics, clear plastics, like the containers your water comes in. It's used inside food cans. It's in dental sealants, adhesives - everywhere."
The chemical is already known to cause epigenetic changes. In his work, Jirtle exposed female mice to the chemical and later bred them. The mothers seemed unaffected, but their pups all later became obese, had fertility problems and either prostate or breast cancer.

Bisphenol-A is a hormone-disrupting chemical considered to be potentially harmful to human health and the environment. It has been known that scratched and worn polycarbonate feeding bottles will leach this chemical into liquids.
Concerns about day to day health for the present generation:
Scientific studies show that:· Phthalates can interfere with the natural functioning of the hormone system.· Phthalates can cause reproductive and genital defects.· Exposure is linked to premature birth and early onset of puberty.· Phthalates may lower sperm count and are associated with the risk factors for testicular cancer.· Phthalates are linked to allergies and asthma.· Exposure may be linked to liver and kidney damage.· Exposure can also interfere with the normal development of a fetus.
The chemical bisphenol A (BPA), widely used in products such as food cans, milk container linings, water pipes and even dental sealants, has now been found to disrupt important effects of estrogen in the developing brain.
Endocrine Disrupters inhibit human thyroid peroxidase activity
These results indicate effects of ED on endocrine regulatory circuits apart form the reproductive axis, namely interference with thyroid hormone biosynthesis on the level of iodide organification. Inhibition of TPO activity might thus contribute to the goitrogenic action reported for some of the ED.
Consumption of Commercial Canned Food and Risk of Hyperthyroidism in Cats
The consumption of canned cat food has been implicated in three epidemiologic studies on factors associated with the incidence of feline hyperthyroidism. In each the duration and exclusiveness of consumption of canned cat food was not reported.
The rumblings around thyroid disease have gone on for a few of years, now. The following is a report from 2001:
Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association in March of 2004 shows some interesting information. There is a strong correlation between eating canned food and developing hyperthyroidism later in life; in fact, cats who eat only canned foods from "pop-top" type cans have five times the risk of developing hyperthryoidism relative to cats who eat only dry food. Cats whose diet is 50% canned food have 3.5 times the risk of developing hyperthyroidism relative to cats who eat only dry food. It has been speculated that pop-top type aluminum cans are lined with a substance called Bisphenol-A-diglycidyl ether, which is transferred into food containing oils or fats. In areas of the world where this type of can is not used for cat food, hyperthyroidism is not a common disease.
And echoed by the AVMA in 2004:
Results—Age-specific hospital prevalence of feline hyperthyroidism increased significantly from 1978 to 1997. Overall, consumption of pop-top canned (vs dry) food at various times throughout life and each additional year of age were associated with greater risk of developing hyperthyroidism. In female cats, increased risk was associated with consumption of food packaged in pop-top cans or in combinations of pop-top and non-pop-top cans. In male cats, increased risk was associated with consumption of food packaged in pop-top cans and age.

It is interesting to read above that Marvistavet is attributing the leaching to the fat content. According to dry matter calculations, canned foods have a disproportionate amount of fat content as the ingredients used are not usually rendered to remove that fat, prior to being included in the product.
Screening for Potential Goitrogenic Effects of Phenolic Compounds in Cat Food Using a Model Iodide Organification System
"Hyperthyroidism is the most frequently diagnosed endocrine disorder in cats, with one in 300 cats developing the disorder. The most common symptoms of feline hyperthyroidism are weight loss, polyphagia, unkempt haircoat, polyuria/polydipsia, vomiting, hyperactivity, and increased fecal volume. Between 97-99% of cats with hyperthyroidism have autonomous functional adenomas of the thyroid. Seventy percent have bilateral adenomas. Because there is no isthmus connecting the two lobes of the thyroid in the feline, the bilateral nature in the majority of cases is significant, indicating that a major factor of developing hyperthyroidism could be nutritional or environmental."
The site above goes on to suggest a theory that other compounds addressed lower down on this page may also have some involvement:
"In unpublished work from our laboratory, several anti-oxidant compounds found in commercial cat food were identified as having potential goitrogenic effects in an in vitro iodide organification assay. These compounds include butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA), with its metabolite, tert-butyl hydroquinone (TBHQ), and ethoxyquin (EQ). Furthermore, several studies have identified isoflavones, present in commercial pet foods that use soy beans as a protein source, as influencing serum thyroid hormone levels. Eating canned food has been associated with a higher risk of developing feline hyperthyroidism. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a plasticizing compound used to line the inside of the metal cans containing pet food and will be evaluated for its ability to influence iodination."
Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals and diabetes: insights from experimental toxicological studies. Alberto Mantovani and Francesca Baldi, Dept. of Food Safety and Veterinary Public Health, Istituto Superiore di Sanità, Rome - Italy. Endocrine Disrupting Chemicals (EDCs) have been given big attention from scientific community because of their involvement in female and male infertility and related diseases. However an increasing number of data suggest how some EDCs may have a role also in the so-called "metabolic syndrome" and, in particular, in type 2 diabetes. In such field, experimental toxicological studies may supply a remarkable contribution, by either supporting the biological plausibility of epidemiological hypoteses or identifying new EDCs potentially involved.
Bisphenol A, an estrogenic EDC, causes hyperinsulinemia and interferes with cell activity in rat, although further data are needed to study this possible association.
"Many present laboratory animal studies suggest that bisphenol A exposure at very low doses is
linked to a staggering number of health problems, including prostate and breast cancer, obesity,
hyperactivity, diabetes, altered immune system, lowered sperm count and sperm defects, increase in aggression, elimination of sex differences in behavior, impaired learning and memory, and early puberty."
Here there is a suggestion that the influence of BPA is irreversible during formative years, but can be reversed if the recipient is adult before exposure:
Insulin resistance and diabetes are believed to be linked to exposure to EDCs, as are neurological problems such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. According to the report, "the disruptive effects of developmental exposure are permanent and irreversible." Adult exposures, it says, result in measurable but reversible effects.
Governments are starting to take note where humans are concerned, and yet no consideration is being given to our pets who are sometimes fed a 100% pop top can diet:
"We concluded the margin of safety is most at risk with newborns," Clement said. Chemical studies on animals have linked BPA to cancer and infertility.
The National Toxicology Program is coming out with new information on Bisphenol A from time to time. My concern around studies related to tolerance levels supposedly have been done by removing food from cans and testing the cans with water in them to determine leaching. Fat content in foods is going to retain and transfer more of the BPA from food cans than water will, so these tests are drastically undervaluing the amount of toxicity involved in foods containing high fat content such as the cat foods being pushed by some veterinarians influenced by the latest circulating fad.

If you or your pet has problems with acid reflux, you can bet the chances are you have carrageenan somewhere in the ingredient lists of the foods you eat. Acid reflux could happen if your cat throws up clear liquid or anything more concrete without a lot of heaving before it is expelled from the mouth. There were online resources on this a few years ago, that seem to be absent at the moment, but I am researching to find more. The big concern here, to my mind, is that with repeated exposure to acid reflux, the esophagus becomes vulnerable to disease because the tissues are weakened. There are definite online resources regarding the coating of the stomach by carrageenan, and this reference also looks into other serious problems for humans, and in particular, infants. A good site showing scientific concern around feeding carrageenan to pets is at Review of Harmful Gastrointestinal Effects of Carrageenan in Animal Experiments. You may find the information helpful to members of your human family as well. When reading through the above site, I noticed that IBS is also being attributed to the inclusion of carrageenan in pet foods, which is new for me. Carrageenan Induces Interleukin-8 Production through Distinct Bcl10 Pathway in Normal Human Colonic Epithelial Cells does tend to confirm this for humans, too. This study was just reinforced with information published in March 2008, Carrageenan Induces Cell Cycle Arrest in Human Intestinal Epithelial Cells in Vitro1. There is also a study regarding the effect upon mammary cancer, just to name a few cautions here.
Guar GumThe use of guar gum in canned foods has been shown to reduce the bioavailability of proteins, as in the following study:
"Guar gum, a soluble nonstarch polysaccharide (NSP) , is a common ingredient in canned cat foods and has been shown to decrease the digestibility of protein in diets for cats (Harper and Siever-Kelly, 1997)."
There are a lot of studies out there showing that guar gum is inappropriate for cats, which has me wondering why the pet food industry insists upon using it in their food.........perhaps so the customer must purchase more product in order to fulfill nutritional needs? Actually, a more realistic assumption is that it provides the right consistancy to be pallatable for cats. Some cats are very picky about texture and consistancy.
"The apparent viscosities of stomach and small intestine contents from animals fed on diets containing 10 and 20 g guar gum/kg were increased relative to control animals, but large intestine contents were unchanged"
"The results suggest that the effects of guar gum and pectin on glucose tolerance and paracetamol absorption could be due simply to alteration in the rate of gastric emptying"
"It is concluded that materials which are classed as dietary fibre but which differ markedly in their physical properties may also differ in the functional changes to which they give rise in the small intestine. These changes may be at least partially mediated by effects on mucosal cell proliferation. "
"Anthranoid-containing plants (including senna [Cassia senna] and cascara [Rhamnus purshiana]) and soluble fibres (including guar gum and psyllium) can decrease the absorption of drugs. "
"Skin prick tests demonstrated an immediate skin reaction to guar gum. All three subjects had high levels of serum IgE antibodies to guar gum. Specific inhalation challenges in which the three subjects were exposed for short intervals (less than or equal to 4 minutes) to powder of guar gum elicited isolated immediate bronchospastic reactions in two subjects and a dual reaction in the other subject. "
"The most common side effects are gastrointestinal (eg, flatulence, abdominal pain, diarrhea, and nausea); may lower levels of vitamins A and E in patients with diabetes; exacerbation of asthma and allergic rhinitis has been reported."
"Metformin blood levels showed that when given together with Guar there was a reduction in the absorption rate over the first 6 hours. These findings suggest that combination therapy may diminish the anti-hyperglycaemic action of metformin."
Guar gum is a powder derived from the seed of a plant called cyamopsis tetragonolobus. It is sometime used as a laxative and is not as good of a substitute for gluten as xanthan gum.
Flax Seed (Oil)
In order to access the essential oils in flax seed, it must be pre-processed to start with, as the outer husk is so hard that even the human digestive tract cannot digest it, which is why this is being listed under "Fibre Content", as flax seeds themselves make a rather harsh form of fibre for delicate cat digestive tracts and can cause destruction to the organ trying to absorb the food you provide, as well as maintain an effective immune system.
As for the oil itself, which I often see recommended for cats, the following information may be of use in making your choice to look for other oils more conducive to feline health. First, an example of the literature out there that will tell you that flax needs a specific enzyme for complete breakdown:
"The enzymes required for essential fatty acids metabolism are delta-6, delta-5 and delta-4-desaturase, of which delta-6-desaturase is the most important because if its function is impaired for whatever reasons, the other two enzymes have nothing to work with. It may also be that delta-6-desaturase is not produced by the body in sufficient quantities, which leads to the same malfunction. "
and following up on that:
"New research reveals millions of Americans are deficient in the vital digestive enzyme called D6D (delta-6 desaturase) required to convert flax oil into EPA and GLA, the two nutrients that fight inflammation. Unlike flax seed oil, borage and fish oils do not require that problematic enzyme, and are fast replacing flax oil among informed dieters."
There are scientific studies that would validate this problem further, but the important issue here is our cats, and the following quotes are more important reading:
"The cat is deficient in delta-6-desaturase, preventing its utilisation of the plant-derived essential fatty acids"
"This finding suggested that cats do not possess the necessary delta-6-desaturase to perform this conversion2-4"
"Cats are unable to synthesize linoleic acid and, because they exhibit low delta-6-desaturase activity, they are also unable to meet their physiologic requirement for
arachidonic acid through biosynthetic pathways. Cats, therefore, require a dietary source of both linoleic and arachidonic acids, from which other physiologically active metabolites may be derived."
"Cats are deficient in D6D and hence cannot synthesize GLA or the subsequent metabolites derived from from LA (3), and must therefore eat a meat-based diet to obtain DGLA. AA, and other longer-chain metabolites of LA, such as DGLA and AA."
Speaking of which, the above statement regarding D6D also applies to sunflower oil.
"However, cats have limited hepatic delta-6 desaturase activity and thus cannot effectively convert linoleic to arachidonic acid and both are considered essential dietary fatty acids in cats.18"
There are other studies online that show a slightly different slant by suggesting that the amount of D6D available, for instance, depends upon the balance of fatty acids already in the system:
It has previously been claimed and subsequently accepted that cats lack 6-desaturase. The present work demonstrates that when domestic felines are maintained on a diet devoid of long-chain n-3 and n-6 fatty acids, 6-desaturase activity can clearly be demonstrated.
The above only shows some information available on D6D, however there are other desaturases as is pointed out in a statement made a little further down in the study above:
"It is possible that the Δ6- and Δ8-desaturase both function in the feline as routes of 20:4n-6 and 20:5n-3 biosynthesis."
One study suggests 8-desaturase is not adequate in felines, either, for instance:
"The existence of a Δ-8 desaturase (Fig. 3), although suggested as an alternative
pathway for the formation of Δ 8,11,14-20:3 and AA (Sinclair et al. 1981) has not been
established. If it were present in cats to any considerable degree, AA synthesis from LA
might occur by this alternative pathway." Table 3 in this study shows a rather extensive list of the Δ-desaturase enzymes needed for obligate carnivores to correctly process fatty acids.
Here is another study published back in 1977 that doesn't show good activity with Δ8-desaturase
"This experiment confirms the absence of both the 6 and 8 desaturases in the cat, and suggests that this species has a dietary requirement for polyunsaturated fatty acids of animal origin."
At first, although there were rumblings about the toxicity of alfalfa on such websites as the ASPCA, there was little substance to sustain the comments I was reading. Eventually, with a little work, here is some of what surfaced:
Alfalfa may, because of the presence of eugenol in the herb, inhibit certain liver microsomal hydroxylating systems. This produces toxic effects from drugs normally metabolized by those systems.
Among the several phenolic compounds assayed for their phytotoxicity on root and shoot growth of alfalfa, coumarin and trans-cinnamic acid at 60 +/- 10 micrograms mL-1 were the most inhibitory. Mixtures of five or more phenolic acids were more phytotoxic than their respective individual components except in the case of trans-cinnamic acid and coumarin.
Alfalfa = Coumarin (acts as an anticoagulant)
Warfarin toxicity can occur as a result of ingestion of pharmaceutic Coumadin or after exposure to the rodenticide superwarfarins. It may be from intentional or unintentional overdose or as a consequence of drug interactions.
The story of the anticoagulant-cum–rat poison begins with an agricultural strategy of the early 1900s, the introduction of sweet clovers in the North American prairies. In 1924 ranchers in Alberta, Canada, observed that cattle feeding on moldy sweet clover were dying from a hemorrhagic disorder; the active agent was found to be dihydroxycoumarin (coumarin itself is shown below). This molecule was synthesized within a year and quickly found use as an anticoagulant. Meanwhile warfarin, the derivative of coumarin, was developed by University of Wisconsin biochemists Mark A. Stahmann and Karl P. Link, and used as a rodenticide. It took 10 years for it to enter clinical practice as a blood-thinner.
Aloe is a member of the lily family, and there a number of varieties, some more of a problem than others. There are more than 500 species of aloe growing in a variety of climates worldwide and only three or four of those are reported to have medicinal properties. Sabaea is particularly bad with compounds such as coniine, which is capable of producing both depressant and excitatory effects on the spinal cord of the cat. It has been compared with curare, and strychnine. This type of information is important if you are growing aloe plants in your house, and possibly applying aloe externally for skin irritations and other folk remedies, as there needs to be specific processing done on a safe variety in order for the resulting product to be "food grade" for your cat, as your cat licks his or her fur.
Depending upon the variety of aloe, and the processing done, to prepare it, there are a number of ways it is used as a human medicine, such as as a laxative and skin salve, a cancer treatment, a glucose control mechanism, and immune system enhancer, however, if you have any plans to use this plant on your cat, or internally, I would definitely look into the variety source and chemicals used for processing further, based upon the chemicals this plant contains that are harmful. Keep in mind the term "Food Grade" when searching for a suitable source. There are also warnings out there that aloe compounds can interfere with regular medications, causing them to be less effective, at best.
Here is an ingredient you wouldn't expect to see on this list, however, if your pet is prone to struvite crystals, be aware that chlorophyll contains magnesium as the core of its molecule, and magnesium is said to contribute to struvite crystals in cats.
Essential oils of rosemary have demonstrated antimicrobial, hyperglycemic, and insulin-inhibiting properties.98,99 The next site states: "These data suggest that the volatile oil of R. officinalis has hyperglycemic and insulin release inhibitory effects in the rabbit."
A postprandial elevation in plasma glucose levels 30 min after administration of maltose or sucrose plus the distilled extract was significantly suppressed compared with glucose levels in mice that did not receive the distilled extract.
Garlic and Onion
In particular Onion, more than garlic, is a blood thinner, and doesn't go well with home testing where you may need your cat's blood to clot within a reasonable time. In fact, my own experience with this was when Hamlet had been sunning himself on the deck, next to the chives, on a day when I was doing a curve. It wasn't until the second time that I smelled freshly chopped chives and realized that the copious amount of blood that came with the small prick of the lancet was a result of Hamlet cheating with the chives. They contain Sodium 2-Propenyl Thiosulfate that oxidizes, (rusts), erythrocytes, also known as red blood cells which is where the term anemia evolves in the well known condition, Hemolytic anemia. Propylene Glycol, sometimes found in pet foods, causes the same effect.
Yucca schidigera extract is included in pet foods to reduce faecal aroma, as an aesthetically pleasing ingredient for humans, rather than a nutritional additive for felines. What pet owners are not told is that the results of the study mentioning the motivation, above, also states the following: " Blood urea increased significantly in YSE-treated cats, possibly due to the saponins of YSE affecting gut wall permeability. This finding contrasts with previously published reports of a reduction in blood urea on the addition of sarsaponin (from YSE) to rat diets and of YSE products to poultry and cattle diets." In other words, while yucca is not showing harmful side effects in studies on other animals, and chickens, cats, with their more sensitive GIT DOES show an effect in lab results for cats.As stated in the British Journal of Nutrition, Volume 88, Number 6, December 2002, pp. 587-605(19), "These structurally diverse compounds have also been observed to kill protozoans and molluscs, to be antioxidants, to impair the digestion of protein and the uptake of vitamins and minerals in the gut, to cause hypoglycaemia, and to act as anti fungal and antiviral agents. These compounds can thus affect animals in a host of different ways both positive and negative."Yucca is also a member of the Liliaceae family. The University of Pennsylvania suggests that members of the lily family have long term effects, "consistent with acute renal failure".
The information around avocado use is usually a little ambiguous which may help to explain why avocado is promoted in one particular pet food, however, it is not something I personally would feed my cats, based upon the following:
"Avocados contain a toxic component called persin," explains Jill A. Richardson, DVM, of the ASPCA Animal Poison Control Center (APCC), "which has been shown to produce cardiac tissue damage, respiratory distress and mammary gland damage in a variety of animals--including horses, goats, sheep, dogs, cattle, rabbits, fish and birds."
The above information is repeated frequently on the net if you do a search.
Ingestion of fruit, leaves, stems, and seeds of avocado has been associated with toxicosis in animals; leaves are the most toxic part. The Guatemalan varieties of avocado have been most commonly associated with toxicosis
If I had a cat that required tamoxifen I might feel comfortable adding avocado to the diet as Persin is supposed to compliment the chemotherapy action of this drug, however, I would never let avocado near a cat with a heart weakness:
Clinical signs: vomiting, diarrhea, death, inflammation of mammary glands of rabbits, goats, cattle, and horses- Cardiac failure in goats- Respiratory distress, generalized congestion, fluid accumulation around the heart.
In Ramesh Gupta's "Veterinary Toxicology, Basic and Clinical Principles" (2007), avocado is listed under Table 13.1, 'Plants affecting the heart', in reference to cardiac glycosides on page 196:
"Interefere with the Na+/K+-ATPase enzyme in cardiac fiberes resulting in decreased intracellular K+ and increased intracellular Na+ causing various degrees of heart block" This section was written by Steven I Baskin, Steven E Czerwinski, Jaime B. Anderson, and Manu M. Sebastian and, as I prefer to see, had reputable references sources for their comments including Akera et al (1973), for those who wish to dig further.
There are warnings regarding human consumption of avocado fruit:
These data suggest that consumption of avocado oil extracted from intact fruit may cause changes in liver metabolism.
Avocado ingestion may decrease the anticoagulant effect of warfarin. Patients taking warfarin should consult their health care provider before eating avocado or taking herbal products.

Allergy to latex, bananas, melons, and peaches may result in a cross-sensitivity to avocado; if allergic, use products that contain avocado with caution.
The cranberry industry is targeting pet foods as a source of income, with no concern for the effect of benzoic acid, or other issues involved that affect felines. Even in the attached Wikipedia site they mention, "Cats have a significantly lower tolerance against benzoic acid and its salts than rats and mice".
Benzoic acid toxicity in felines is well documented online at sites such as the following:
Outbreaks of poisoning affecting 28 cats have followed ingestion of meat containing 2.39% benzoic acid. The effects were nervousness, excitability, and loss of balance and vision. Convulsions occurred and 17 cats either died or were killed. Autopsies showed damage to intestinal mucosa and liver. The sensitivity of the cat may be due to its failure to form benzoyl glucuronide and toxicity may develop with quantities greater than 0.45 g/kg single doses or 0.2 g/kg repeated doses (Bedford & Clarke, 1971).
In cats, glucuronidation is generally very low (Williams, 1967).
CHEMINFO Record Number: 374, states, "Ingestion:
Convulsions and death were observed following single oral doses of greater than 450 mg/kg benzoic acid to cats. Similar effects were observed following daily doses of greater than 200 mg/kg. The authors conclude that these effects are likely specific to cats.(12) "
Cranberries are sometimes recommended for reduction of crystal growth, but there have been studies showing that cranberries are not effective for this. As the first study here shows that it is the benzoic acid that is supposed to suppress crystals, this is not a healthy option for cats.
Cranberries also contain Salicylic acid that is very similar to aspirin. Aspirin is not good for pets.
Contain various sugars, and phenols that are not appropriate for felines. If your cat has allergies to pollen, you may find apples affecting this condition. Apples also contain Oxalic acid 500 µg that will contribute to crystal formation. Apple fibre also lowers the digestibility of proteins. Apples also contain phenols that are known to be irritants specifically to cats, (well known in cleaning products), and may cause dermatological discomfort at the least. If the seeds are included in the content included in a food, then amygdalin has been known "in rare cases to be fatal."
The Cornell Book of Cats 2nd edition, p. 383, Reference Guide: First Aid for Plant Poisoning states the following about the green peel on potatoes:
"Type of Illness: Lower Gastrointestinal
Vomiting, abdominal pain, bloody diarrhea, dry mouth, all after a latent period of 18-24 hours after plant was eaten. May proceed to nervous system stimulation followed by, i.e., trembling, salivation, and paralysis. May lead to cardiac arrest."
Cornell clarifies that the part of the plant they are describing are, "Nightshades, Jerusalem cherry, Potato (green parts and eyes)." While we should be able to have confidence in the term "human grade", it is very easy to see green parts on potatoes in supermarkets that humans are expected to prepare by removing the peal. I don't see that happening with pet foods, however, that is my personal opinion. The glycoalkaloids are also in bruised potatoes and flesh irritated by micro-organisms.
Then there are other sites online that you may access, such as here, and here, with the second site stating that these alkaloids are not removed with cooking.
Along with the site above you can access Cornell who include the "solanum-type glycoalkaloids" as part of their poison plant section. Lower on the same page, after clarifying that it is the greener tomatoes that will be a risk, they echo the fact, "These alkaloids are not destroyed by cooking or drying at high temperatures" Tomato Puree contains 16.4 grams of carbohydrate per 100 grams of tomato.

However, BHA induces in animals tumours of the forestomach, which are dose dependent, wherease BHT induces liver tumours in long-term experiments.
